How to enter

youngwriters.jpgYour entry can be in the form of a short story, an interview, poem, a scene from a play.... as long as it is in English and it deals with the theme of home. No more than 1,000 words please. Entries which are longer will be disqualified.

Entries can be submitted either digitally or by traditional post.

If you are using paper, please write on one side of the page only. This makes it easier to scan your entry to upload onto the website.

If you are sending a digital entry, please save as a Word file (not docx) and name the file ywc+your name. Pdfs are also acceptable, named ywc+your name.

A few rules
  • Entries must be in English and no more than 1,000 words long
  • You must be aged 6 to 18 to enter and you must be at school in the Netherlands
  • Prizes will be awarded in three age categories: 6-9, 10-13 and 14-18.
  • Each entry should be clearly labeled with the entrant's

    •  Name:
    •  School:
    •  Class:
    •  Age:
    •  Date of birth:
    •  Contact email: *
    •  School contact name:
    •  School contact email:
* Optional: Being able to contact winners directly reduces the burden on teachers, but we understand younger children may not have email or there may be privacy concerns. In this case, we would ask teachers to make sure children are kept informed if they win or their entry is included in the book.

In the case of paper entries, this information must be glued or stapled to the entry on a separate sheet of paper. You can cut and paste the list above and use this to make it easier.

Conditions
  • All winning entries and a selection of the best of the rest will be placed on the competition website, identified by name and child's age only.
  • All entries will be donated to the Expat Archive in the Hague which is documenting the global social history of expatriate life..
  • The winning entries in each age category will be printed in The Xpat Journal's summer 2010 edition.
  • The judges' decision is final and there will be no correspondence with the judges' about their choices.
